Solar Panels

Solar energy originates in the depths of the sun. In essence, the sun undergoes an ongoing stream of thermonuclear explosions as hydrogen and helium atoms fuse. The rays we encounter on earth are the resultant radiation from these explosions. Most of the energy from the sun currently goes unharnessed, at least actively, though sunlight is of course the source that heats the planet and grows our food.

Natural light has always been, of course, vital to the existence of life on earth. Many solar power techniques are still designed on best making use of this light, by orienting a building toward the sun, or using materials that best trap lighting, for example.

Ideas like this are referred to as passive solar energy. They make use of the sun’s heating power but they don’t actively work to convert it into electricity. The process by which solar panels generate electricity, on the other hand, is called active solar power. This simply means that these panels do work to convert the sun’s energy into usable electricity.

Solar panels utilize solar (or photovoltaic) cells, which are arranged in a grid on the surface of the solar panel. The most effective solar panels are installed facing toward the south in an area (typically, though not always, a rooftop) that is not obscured by trees or anything else that will block the sun. These cells collect sunlight during the daylight hours and convert it into electricity.

Practically speaking, these panels can be used in a number of different ways. They can be added to the rooftops of homes or business to help energy efficiency. There are hybrid electricity systems available that work in tandem with conventional electricity to provide power. The panels themselves also vary in shape, power and capability. If you are looking to use solar energy, you have many options available to you.

The amount of electricity solar panels generate will depend on the model you choose, as well as the newness and quality of that solar panel. Solar cells can last decades; however, they become less efficient with time and use.

There are some drawbacks to solar panels as well. Although they can lead to savings in energy spending in the long run, they can be expensive to purchase and install upfront. They also cannot generate any electricity at night, for obvious reasons. For this reason some people choose to incorporate a hybrid system. Those that rely on solar power exclusively might have to rearrange their routine in some ways. Solar batteries are also available which store the sun’s energy during the day and then can be used at night.

Whatever the drawbacks, the potential benefits of solar energy actively converted by these panels are numerous. One of the biggest advantages of solar power is that it is non-polluting. Unlike oil, solar power does not emit any greenhouse gases or carcinogens into the air. It is also renewable, unlike finite sources like goal and oil, as the sun is not going to run out any time soon. Finally, though the panels themselves can be expensive to install, you will start saving money on your energy bill immediately if you use solar panels.
